you, dana. the clock is ticking, 12 hours before we hit that fiscal cliff deadline. if a deal is not reached, how is it going to affect us? the tax policy center crunched numbers. here's a couple scenario. if you're single with no kids and you make $50,000 a year, you you see your taxes go up by $1500. now, take a married couple with two kids making $100,000. they would see their taxes go up $5300 a year. i want to turn to christine patrolman m romans in new york to talk about the people that are really, really going to feel this immediately and it's going to have the greatest impact. who are they? >> the first people to feel it are on extended federal unemployment benefits. for them, for 2 million of them suzanne, on december 29th, that was the end of the last week of unemployment benefits for them. so immediately hundreds of dollars a week of unemployment benefits go away. for everyone else, anybody who works at a company and pays payroll taxes, your taxes will rise. it looks like that will happen no matter what. your pay dhek will be p smaller no matter what because the pay

we all go over the fiscal cliff. that meeting lasted for an hour and five minutes. now on a story where every second and every maneuver counts let's get right to chief white house correspondent increase ka yellin. the president says he's modestly optimistic but he also presented a backup plan. does the president really think it will come to that? >> at this point, no. they don't. because the white house is hopeful, first of all, that the agreement that the senators are working on can actually move forward after the meeting here. there is a modest uptick in enthusiasm about that possibility. but as for the backup plan, there's no real likelihood that would ever come to a vote. because republicans would likely block it in both the senate and it would likely not come to a vote in the house. so that's really more rhetoric than it is reality and we have to hope for option "a," getting an agreement in the senate, if we're going to avoid going over the cliff. >> rhetoric versus reality, that's always a tricky place to be in washington. listen, this is serious high-stakes political poker

to avoid the fiscal cliff. even if a deal is thrown together at the 11th hour, senate majority leader harry reid says what they come up with will be imperfect. and some people aren't going to like it. i spoke with independent new york stock exchange trader kenny polkari earlier and asked them how wall street is reacting to the looming fiscal cliff. >> we've come right to the 11th hour. the -- the fact that there's going to be a substantive deal that comes out of this in the 11th hour is probably nil to zero, right? essentially in my sense, it's easier to go over the cliff. then there's clarity, right? taxes will go up, spending will get cut. the market will know what is going to happen. it can only get better from there because then you'll get legislators that come to the table, that try to cut taxes and raise some spending, and they'll argue it from a positive point of view and stand up and say, rah-rah, look what we, did right? it won't get any worse if we go over the cliff. if there's a bandaid, it leaves complete confusion, there is no clarity, the market will probably react more negati

to work, another sign of inaction on the fiscal cliff front. joining me now for our daily fix, mr. jonathan capehart, msnbc contributor and "washington post" editorial writer. jonathan, we're just six days away, no indication from house republicans that they are going to come back any time soon. the leadership has gone mum on that. we know there's not been communication between boehner and mcconnell, obama and boehner. are you amazed with this short amount of time to go there seems to be no sense of urgency on either side? >> am i amazed, given what we went through with the debt ceiling, no, i'm not amazed. i think there are forces here in this town that would like for us, sure people would like for there to be a deal, but going over the cliff on january 1st when there's this notion where it's not really a cliff, it's a slope, it's a curb depending who you talk to, that you can repair the damage if you get a deal done, you know, a few days after january 3rd. i think people feel like they can slow walk. as we saw last week when plan b failed, you know, speaker boehner said it's up

. the president's remarks came an hour and a half after he finished a white house talking session on the fiscal cliff with republican leaders john boehner and mitch mcconnell and democratic leaders harry reid and nancy pelosi. returning to capitol hill mitch mcconnell went to the senate floor saying he is optimistic there can be a deal. he believes it can come by sunday afternoon, and at that point he would go back to the president with whatever it is he and reid are agreeing to. he said's optimistic that the next 24 hours are critical. however, tennessee senator bob cochran says even if a deal does get done don't expect too much. >> we're goakd up with a small kick the can down the road bill that creates another fiscal cliff to deal with this fiscal cliff. >> the president did say deja vu all over again. if corker is right, we are going to say some of the same machinations we've seen before. if it doesn't happen, the president wants that up or down vote on his plan. >> remember night, monday night is new year's eve when it all could go bad. >> and happy new year to you. >> thank you, gary. >>>

'reilly. thanks for watching us. our top story tonight, the last ditch effort to avert the fiscal cliff. president obama met with congressional leaders for several hours at the white house today to try to hammer out a deal before taxes go up on more than 160 million americans. after the meeting, the president presented a new plan to avoid the cliff and said he was modestly optimistic. >> we had a constructive meeting today. senators reid and mcconnell are discussing a potential agreement where we can get a bipartisan bill out of the senate over into the house and done in a timely fashion so that we met the december 31st deadline. given how things have been working in this town we have to actually wait and see until it actually happens. the one thing that the american people should not have to wait and see is some sort of action. so if we don't see an agreement between the two leaders in the senate, i expect a bill to go on the floor. and i have asked senator reid to do. this put a bill on the floor that makes sure that taxes on middle class families don't go up, that unemployment insurance is stil

'll look back at the wild weather of 2012. >>> call it fiscal cliff friday, stocks taking a nosedive again as lawmakers take their fight into the final hours. congress and the president have until the ball drops new year's eve to figure something out on those automatic tax hikes and spending cuts, but union workers have figured out a deal to avoid the so-called container cliff for now with the massive weekend strike looming, the longshoremen, shippers, operators and ports all agreeing to extend the union's contract until early february and avoid port shutdowns. meantime as the year winds down, 2012 is shaping up to be a pretty good one for banks. american banks closing out their best profits in six years and fewest failures since 2008, 51 banks closed their doors this year, still a lot historically but well below recent levels. drumroll, please. the top money making star of 2012, denzel washington. theater owners nationwide say moviegoers flock to denzel's movies more than anyone else's and hathaway and hugh jackson round out the top three. that's business. i'm eric bolling.
